Nyame Anim is a photograph made in situ at Trinidad & Tobago. I retraced the steps of my ancestor Sandy, an 18th century liberation figure born in the Gold Coast and taken to Tobago where he was enslaved. In 1770, with a group of trusted co-conspirators, he started the first documented slave rebellion in Tobago. The legend is he evaded capture by swimming 25 nautical miles from Tobago to the North Coast of Trinidad. I considered what he may have seen in the water as he fled.
This work is part of "The Land Sings of A Dream," Niama Safia Sandy’s new series of experimental film photographs. The images offer abstracted, dream-like scenes connected to energetic resonance at Global Black Diaspora historical sites related to liberation and cultural activity.
