The Trees Remember (Trinidad & Tobago), 2025

120 mm giclèe print on Baryta paper

32 inches by 32 inches

Edition of 5, Signed Verso

The Trees Remember (2025) was made at the shores of both Trinidad’s North Coast & Tobago retracing the steps of my ancestor, Sandy, an 18th century liberator. In 1770, he started the first slave known rebellion in Tobago. The legend is he swam from Tobago to the North Coast of Trinidad to evade capture. As I retraced my ancestor’s steps, I imagined what he might have seen as he moved with these spaces.

This work is from "The Land Sings of A Dream" Niama Safia Sandy’s new series of experimental film photographs. The images offer abstracted, dream-like scenes connected to energetic resonance at Global Black Diaspora historical sites related to liberation and cultural activity.
